Field Trips

Scottish Geo-Transect: from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye

Organised by: Dorrik Stow, Uisdean Nicholson and Helen Lever

Excursion from Edinburgh across the principal geo-tectonic features of Scottish geology to NW Scotland and the Isle of Skye. Crossing the Midland Valley sedimentary succession, the Highland Boundary Fault, the Great Glen Fault, Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, the Moine Trust (pictured above), the pre-Cambrian Torridonian succession, Jurassic sediments and Tertiary igneous volcanics of Skye. The geology will be interwoven with history, castles, legend and stunning scenery.

Contourites and reworked turbidites from the Eocene to Miocene deposits of the Lefkara and Pakhna Formations (Cyprus): distinguish criteria and implications

May 28 – June 2 2023 – Cyprus

Organised by: Hernandez-Molina, F.J. (Royal Holloway University of London), Hüneke, H. (Universität Greifswald), Rodríguez-Tovar, F.J. (Universidad de Granada), Llave, E. (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España), Mena, A. (University of Vigo), Miguez-Salas, O. (Universidad de Granada)

Booking via: Mar Avendaño (Airbus Travel Agency) mar@airbusgalicia.com

During this field trip, we will visit key field localities that showcase some of the best-known examples of ancient bottom current deposits in the Lefkara and Pakhna Formations (Cyprus). Sedimentary facies, ichnological information, microfacies and sedimentary models will be discussed and associated with analogue deposits in modern/recent deep-water environments and compared to other deep-water deposits (as reworked turbidites, turbidites, mass transport and pelagic/hemipelagic deposits) in the same outcrops, and their conceptual significance will be discussed.
